Default Strategies - Beyond Maintenance Solutions

Published on February 18, 2026

In Unit 7, we conclude the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) process by exploring Default Strategies, the final step in the RCM framework. While RCM is renowned for its ability to identify proactive maintenance tasks, it also offers a broader perspective, encouraging us to consider alternative solutions when proactive maintenance isn't the answer. These strategies might include equipment redesign, changes in operating procedures, or the development of new training programs. We also introduce the concept of Failure Finding tasks, essential for ensuring that protective devices, such as smoke detectors, are in working order when needed. This unit ties together all seven steps of the RCM process, emphasizing that effective failure management often requires a combination of maintenance and non-maintenance solutions.
