[eBook] Measuring Maintenance Effectiveness: 7 Data Capture Methods for Effective Decision Making
In today's data-driven business world, it's critical to choose the right Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to make informed decisions and drive continuous improvement. The purpose of measuring is to enable managers to make the most informed decisions possible. KPIs should align with your organization's goals and cascade down from the strategic to the departmental level. Choosing the right measurements will enable you to identify areas for improvement and take action to achieve your business goals.
It's important to manage the KPIs you choose, as measuring for the sake of measuring is a waste of time and effort. You must confirm that you're setting up the KPIs or goals correctly. Start at the strategic level and determine what your organization hopes to achieve and how you will measure it. Then determine what performance level your plant must deliver to support these goals and how this is connected. The same criteria apply at the departmental level.
Remember that KPIs will drive behavior, and it's your responsibility as a manager to ensure that the drive is in the right direction. If you're not going to manage it, don't bother measuring it. By selecting the right KPIs and managing them effectively, you can identify opportunities for improvement and take action to achieve your business goals. In maintenance, for example, you must determine which measurements you should be made to identify areas ripe for improvement. By doing so, you can focus on making data-driven decisions and driving continuous improvement.
